What is RSS? What is RSS?Keeping up to date with essential information you want can be a full time job in itself. Wouldn't it be better to have the latest news from all the best sources delivered to you automatically, rather than clicking around the internet from site to site? RSS allows you to browse all your selected sites new content in one place. You can get the latest headlines and articles (or even audio files, photographs or video in some cases), as soon as they are published, without having to remember to visit each site every day. Not all websites provide RSS, but its popularity is growing fast. Nearly all serious news sites provide the service including the BBC, Guardian, New York Times and CNN to name but a few. How do I start using RSS feeds? To make the best use of RSS you need a news reader. This is a piece of software or service that checks RSS feeds and shows you the content according to your preferences. There are two different types, service based (which are accessed using a browser and provided by the likes of Google), and application based (which are installed onto your machine). Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer or hand held with internet access (great for when you away from your desk), whereas installed applications get the stories and store them on your main computer. The difference is similar to the way that you either download your e-mail using Outlook, or keep it on a web-based service like Hotmail.
Some browsers, including Firefox, Opera, Safari and Internet Explorer 7, automatically check for RSS feeds for you when you visit a website, and display an icon (like the ones shown here) when they find one. This can make subscribing to RSS feeds much easier. For more details on these, please check their websites.
